Herringbone Stitch – Knit

Herringbone stitch produces a very tight fabric so I suggest that you use a size bigger needles than you normally would for the yarn you are going to use.

Herringbone stitch creates a beautifully braided fabric and will make a very warm garment or a lovely handbag. It is also ideal for making blankets, pillows and other home décor.  It uses a fair amount more yarn than stocking stitch would.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Herringbone Stitch in knitting?
Herringbone Stitch is a knitting technique that creates a beautifully braided, interlocking fabric. Because of its tight, structured texture, it is ideal for warm garments, handbags, blankets, pillows, and home décor.

What needle size should I use for Herringbone Stitch?
Since Herringbone Stitch produces a very tight fabric, it is recommended to use needles one size larger than you would normally choose for your yarn. This helps keep the fabric workable and prevents it from becoming too stiff.

What is the stitch multiple for Herringbone Stitch?
Cast on an even number of stitches. Because the pattern repeats across just two rows, it is simple to adapt to any project width as long as your stitch count is even.

Does Herringbone Stitch use more yarn than other stitches?
Yes. Because of the way stitches interlock in Herringbone Stitch, it uses noticeably more yarn than stocking stitch would for the same number of rows. So it is worth calculating your yarn requirements carefully before starting a larger project.

What skill level is needed for Herringbone Stitch?
Although the technique is a little different from standard knitting, it is accessible to confident beginners. However, the stitch does require care and concentration, since each stitch involves slipping and passing stitches in a specific way.

What can I make with Herringbone Stitch?
Because it creates such a firm, warm fabric, Herringbone Stitch works particularly well for garments, handbags, blankets, and cushion covers. It is also a lovely choice for home décor projects where a structured, textured fabric is needed.
